There are many aerobic benefits to riding a road bike. Any type of exercise is beneficial but cycling is less strenuous on bones than higher impact activities like running. One of the best things about cycling, is that it can also be taken up by people of any age.
Riding a bike reduces the chances of having serious conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. It is calculated that a even riding a short distance every day can reduce the risk of death by as much as 22% since exercise reduces the incidence of heart disease.
A daily cycling regimen of thirty minutes, five days a week can burn up to 11 pounds of fat off your body in a year.
If you are inclined to exercise more, it has been determined that one hour of vigorous cycling can use up 700 calories. Studies done in the field of exercise has revealed that a regular short distance bicycle ride can improve one’s aerobic fitness by 11% after six weeks. If the ride is eight miles a day the aerobic benefits increase to 17%.
As the cyclist exercises, they breathe more therefore giving more oxygen to the blood for distribution to the body’s organs, as well as exercising the heart muscles. As the leg muscles are strengthened, they start to burn more calories.
