Hebrides Vacations And The Isle of Harris
Apr 27th, 2009 by DavePF
Bathing on the beach for the whole of my summer vacation has never really been the type of thing I would do. Please do not get the wrong idea, I really do enjoy relaxing on a beach, but, I also enjoy spending time elsewhere while on a vacation. I like to soak in the atmosphere, I also like to experience the local food and culture. To be honest each year I like to experience something new and I try extremely hard attempting to find somewhere one hundred percent unique and different. This is the most probable reason why I enjoy visits to the Hebridean island known as the Isle of Harris and why I regularly choose to book a self catering cottage on Harris.
The Isle of Harris is a small island situated off the west coast of Scotland. The island is one of over three hundred of little isles/islands which are known as the the Outer Hebrides, although to be 100% accurate the UK postal address is the Western Isles. Accepted as either the Outer Hebrides or the Western Isles the islands are beautiful in the extreme and amazingly unique. For visitors who simple can’t do without a beach with golden sands Harris has countless to choose from and all are superb and nearly always deserted. It sometimes seems as though beyond corner you are met by an awesome sight. The roads on the Isle of Harris are not the same as elsewhere in Scotland and the United Kingdom in some areas the roads are single track and you will need to know how to use passing places to let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. All you need do is come to a halt on the left hand side of the road. However, if the vehicle wishing to get past you is very big and the passing place is on your right you can pull up into it to allow the big vehicle pass more easily but at all time take care not to end up off the road too much.
One of the most common factors in attracting visitors to the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the islands culture and landscape. The culture of the Isle of Harris has, throughout history been strongly influenced by the Norse, Celtic, English and Scottish races. Nowadays Gaelic is the most widely spoken language and although many speak English, it is more often their second language. The inhabitants of the Isle of Harris are amongst the friendliest on earth and their hospitality is extremely well known. The people of Harris are very proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and go to great lengths to keep the place tidy and clean so it is crucially important not to leave litter.
Dotted along the west coast of the Isle of Harris are to be found some of the most breath takingly beautiful golden sandy beaches in the whole of Scotland, and many folk believe the United Kingdom. You will notice that the waters are very clear and it is a fact that the Isle of Harris beaches are lovely and clean. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid debris washing up from ships in the Atlantic but happily there isn’t much.
