Vacations in the Scottish town of Dundee And A Selection Of First Class Places Worth Visiting
May 1st, 2009 by DavePF
Ever since the time of the Picts there has been a settlement at Dundee. The city of Dundee, Scotland’s 4th largest city, has long been associated with trade and commerce. The 3 main industries, in the city of Dundee, were “jute, journalism and jam”. Though the city of Dundee can be described as a post-industrial city it has something of a mixed economy and a large proportion of its inhabitants are still employed in the manufacturing sector (by comparison with the rest of the country), about 13.5%. Recently the tourism trade has begun to become a pretty important element in the local economy and there are a fair number of guest houses offering bed and breakfast accommodation in Dundee and in the following text I introduce readers to 3 visitor attractions in Dundee; Sensation Science Centre, Verdant Works and Discover Point Visitor Centre:
The Discover Point Visitor Centre
Discovery Point is a fascinating and award-winning Dundee attraction that tells the tale of the most adventurous exploration voyages ever done, the story of the world famous explorer of the Antarctic, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and the ship he used on his first voyage, the RRS Discovery. On the 21st of March, 1901, the Discovery was launched from the Panmure Shipyard, Dundee. Captain Scott and his crew set off for Antarctica on 6th August nineteen hundred and one, reaching there in January nineteen hundred and two. The RRS Discovery is a major part of the centre having been fully restored inside and out. Narrow passageways and steep stairs can create problems in getting around for those with mobility issues, fortunately, you will find that there is an audio visual presentation on the dockside.
Sensation Science Centre
If you are looking for a visitor attraction which will provide family entertainment, then Dundee’s Sensation Science Centre is the ideal place to go. Sensation Dundee is the only science centre in Britain which is based upon the 5 senses of the human body. You are able to discover the miracles of sciences through use of the human body’s senses with over 80 hands-on interactive exhibits. Visitors will also find live scientific experiments and demonstrations, which demonstrate how common ingredients found in the home can be utilised to fascinating effect. Folk interested in surgery can have an attempt at keyhole surgery. Sensation brings science to life in lots of highly fascinating ways.
Verdant Works
Verdant Works was, in the past, a fully working jute mill. At it’s peak, in the eighteen sixties and eighteen seventies, the jute industry in Dundee had a workforce of around 50,000 workers in excess of 60 factories across the city of Dundee. These days, Verdant Works brings the industry to life, by utilising a wide range of displays including, interactive computers, original machinery and film shows. This incredible museum once housed 3 immense steam engines which ran 70 looms and 2 thousand 8 hundred spindles. There was also a workforce of 5 hundred, spinning and preparing jute for it to be weaved in another factory across the road. Renovation of the building started in 1992 and it opened its doors to the public for the first time on September the 16th, 1996.
